Take me to…Matawe Intertidal Pool, Aurora

Large natural pools, interesting rock formations, and hardly a tourist in sight

By Monica De Leon

Take a dip in one of the many natural pools that appear as the sea waters of Matawe in Dingalan, Aurora, about 274km northeast of Manila, recede at low tide. Rock formations are exposed creating an interesting backdrop to tidal pools, some large enough for you to swim in. The water is so clear and unpolluted that you’d be swimming with resident fishes. Not too many tourists get to reach this side of the archipelago making this an excellent place for a day out.

Stay at Matawe Bay Ocean Front Resort, a sprawling beachfront property with native style cottages with aircon rooms and private bathrooms, from P3,000 (US$60) per cottage per night.

To get there, take a Baliwag Transit bus from its terminal in Cubao in Manila to Cabanatuan. Get off the bus at Cabanatuan City’s terminal and hop on a Dingalan-bound Danilo Express bus or a jeepney. In Dingalan town proper, hire a tricycle to take you to the village of Matawe.
