It’s Shangri -La so you expect five stars and the newly-opened hotel in trendy Bonifacio Global City, also called The Fort, delivers. I was booked in the premier suite, quite spacious at about 96sqm, designed in greys and beiges. It’s a money-is-no-object option catering to business travellers with rates for suites at the Shangri-La from P11,000++ (about US$220) a night. The suite has one bedroom with en suite bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe, work desk, and a 48-inch flat screen TV. The living room is spacious with a work area and desk, Wi-Fi, guest toilet, cable TV, coffee table with fruit basket, and a Magimix nespresso machine with a choice of coffee pods, including decaf. Just off the living room is a dining area. The floor to ceiling glass window affords you a view of the city skyline. Everything about the suite spells luxury — thick carpets, velvety fabric sofas and chairs, high-thread-count bed linen, feather duvets, pillow menu, and all your daily grooming needs catered for with L’Occitane toiletries.
The hotel is one of the tallest towers in the city at 250 meters and has a total of 576 rooms and suites, and on its upper floors some 97 Shangri-La Residences with one to three bedrooms with a kitchenette, and living and dining area, perfect for long-stays.
FOOD. The food at the hotel's High Street Café, an all-day dining buffet restaurant, was fabulous. I had quite an eclectic mix of dishes, but mainly enjoyed the sushi and sashimi, the roast suckling pig at the carvery and Filipino desserts from cassava cake to guinataan. There's quite a selection of dishes, from Western, Pan-Asian, Chinese, Japanese, to Mediterranean plus a seafood bar, salad bar and dessert station. The restaurant was packed when I was there, with queues at the reception. Surely a good sign.
SERVICE. I can't find fault. High Street Cafe was fully booked, but the staff set up an extra table to accommodate us. The hotel concierge service was excellent. My Uber ride was late so the concierge staff kindly offered to wait for the ride for me in sweltering noonday heat while I wait in the comfort of the airconditioned lobby. Simple frontline staff gestures that make this hotel.
VERDICT. This is a perfect high-end hotel for business travelers and leisure travelers, a wonderful base to come home to if you've got the budget to spare. It's located in a trendy development near Makati, facing the swanky new Philippine Stock Exchange building, which was under construction during my hotel stay, and high-rise residences and office buildings, luxury retail shops and restaurants.
