Hotel review: The Oriental Legazpi

If you’d like a room with a view, this hotel delivers. Watch stunning Mt. Mayon from your room’s private balcony

The 115-room Oriental Legazpi sits on top of Taysan hill in Sto. Nino, Legazpi, and has the most enviable view of the famous perfect cone-shaped Mayon volcano. Its façade is all glass so you see the perfect cone-shaped volcano from most areas in the hotel. The hotel’s interior is all white, amplifying the natural light, creating a bright and airy feeling, further helped by its high ceiling and skylight. During my visit in late January, a huge tree decorated with Chinese lanterns and red money packets occupied the foyer in time for Chinese New Year.

Deluxe City Twin room in Oriental Legazpi by Christian Sangoyo

Room. I am booked in a deluxe city twin, with two double beds dressed in simple white bed linen. The room is decorated predominantly in white with grey accents. Sliding glass doors open out to a private balcony that overlooks Legazpi City. Other rooms have balconies that open out to either Mayon volcano, the Albay gulf or the cityscape. The room is carpeted, has adequate storage space, a large safe able to accommodate at least two laptops, and all modcons, including TV, Wi-Fi internet access, and a modern bathroom with glass enclosed rain shower.

Food. Jasmine Restaurant is a fine dining restaurant serving native Albay cuisine. For breakfast, there’s fried rice, dried fish, an egg station, local pork sausages from neighboring town Guinobatan, appetizers like tomatoes, salted eggs, and local rice cakes. Buffet dinner is a mix of traditional Bicolano and fusion Bicolano fare. From the a la carte menu, balukong florentine or scallops from Sorsogon topped with creamy spinach Florentine sauce.

Service. Professional but not stiff.

We like. Great views of Mayon volcano, natural light streaming in from the skylight, the comfortable rooms, early morning native breakfast with a view.

Not so keen. The Wi-Fi at Jasmine is strong but hard to access from the room; the sink is not as spotless as I expect it to be.

Verdict. Perfect location. A comfortable basecamp to come home to if you’re spending an activity-filled day in Albay. Love the creature comforts. Highly recommended.
